Ford said that it is planning to launch an entry-level SUV in the Chinese market early next year. This SUV will be jointly developed by Ford with its Chinese partner. The American car-maker expects this model to boost its efforts to revive the declining business in the country.
The new vehicle, Ford Territory, will be developed in conjunction with Jiangling Motors Corp (JMC). Ford will be providing three engines for the upcoming model, which also includes a plug-in hybrid version.
This is the first time Ford will be introducing a model in this segment. The entry level electrified SUV segment has been instrumental in propelling China to become the largest market for automobiles.
Chinese domestic car brands such as Geely and Great Wall Motors have been capitalising on this popular segment of vehicles from quite some time. The Ford Territory gives the automaker a level playing field to compete with these home grown brands.
Ford will be targeting smaller cities in China which are growing rapidly and have an appetite for the segment in which the American automaker wishes to operate. With Ford’s DNA and technology onboard the new SUV, the company believes that this vehicle will prove to be a stepping stone for the brand’s success in China.
